The Foundation
On December 17, 2016, based on the results achieved by the partnership during the first phase of work and in light of the significant interest shown by industry professionals and the thousands of pilgrims and hikers who have already walked the route, the project partners decided to establish a participatory foundation called the Fondazione Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara. The founding members are the municipalities of Arbus, Buggerru, Carbonia, Fluminimaggiore, Giba, Gonnesa, Gonnosfanadiga, Guspini, Iglesias, Masainas, Musei, Narcao, Nuxis, Piscinas, San Giovanni Suergiu, Santadi, Sant’Antioco, Tratalias, Villacidro, Villamassargia, and Villaperuccio, along with the “Associazione ONLUS POZZO SELLA Per il Parco Geo-minerario.” The Dioceses of Iglesias and of Ales Terralba have joined the Foundation as participating members.
The Foundation, which is responsible for implementing, promoting, and managing the route, will, among other activities, issue credentials, provide GPS tracks, install temporary signage and create permanent signage, complete works to restore and set up the route, and supply all necessary information to ensure the best experience for walkers.
The Foundation is a non-profit organization, and all proceeds from its assets and activities are entirely allocated to achieving its statutory objectives.
The Foundation’s initial assets are made up of the knowledge, studies, surveys, and documentation—including the brand and the route’s internet domain—freely provided by the “Associazione Pozzo Sella,” which committed to this in the deed of incorporation, as well as the endowment fund resulting from the cash contributions from the other founding members.
The establishment of the Foundation is a source of great satisfaction and pride for all the volunteers who contributed generously, skillfully, and selflessly to this accomplishment.
It was a new and challenging experience, and at the same time an extraordinary and uplifting one—one that only someone with a deep love for their land can undertake.
But the real masterpiece of institutional unity came from the city councils of the municipalities involved, whose unanimous decisions planted a seed of social cohesion by choosing to establish the Fondazione Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara.
