The Santa Barbara Mining Trail is one of the most captivating routes in Europe, winner of national and international awards: about 500 kilometres through southwestern Sardinia, crossing abandoned mines, breathtaking landscapes, and wild coastline. But before setting foot on the trails, you first have to reach the island—and doing it the right way is already part of the journey.

How to get here by plane
The main gateway to reach the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara is Cagliari-Elmas Airport, which is connected to Iglesias, the starting point of the route, in about an hour by train or bus. Cagliari Airport offers an extensive network of national and international flights, with numerous direct connections operated by both full-service and low-cost airlines such as Ryanair, Volotea, easyJet, and Wizz Air.
During the summer season, Cagliari is connected to 17 Italian regions via 41 domestic routes as well as to many major European cities, including Paris, Brussels, Barcelona, London, Frankfurt, and Vienna, among many other destinations.
Thanks to this network, the route is easily accessible both from the main Italian cities and from many European countries.
How to get here by boat
Those who prefer a slower, more scenic arrival can choose to travel by ferry. The main routes to Cagliari depart from Civitavecchia and Naples (Grimaldi, Tirrenia); there are alternatives from Genoa and Livorno, but the crossings are longer. This is the ideal choice for those who want the journey to be part of the experience, or have bulky luggage. A cabin provides decent rest during the night; a reclining seat is sufficient for shorter trips but not recommended for longer overnight crossings.
From Cagliari to Iglesias: the final leg
An important detail to consider for optimal trip planning concerns the connections between Cagliari and Iglesias.
From Cagliari-Elmas Airport and the Cagliari central station, you can reach Iglesias by regional train, usually in about an hour and at a low cost. However, until 30 April 2027, construction works are scheduled on the railway line and, for part of the route, the service is provided by replacement buses. Alternatively, ARST bus connections are also available.
It's also useful to remember that on Sundays and public holidays, trips may be less frequent: we therefore recommend, especially for those arriving at the weekend, to check the schedules in advance.
In the “Plan” section of our website, you’ll find a dedicated search tool where you can consult bus and train timetables both for reaching Iglesias from Cagliari and for planning transfers between one stage and another of the Cammino.
