Cosa mettere nello zaino

What should you pack in your backpack for the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara?

Your gear can naturally vary depending on the season, the length of your trip and your personal needs: here is a summary of his recommendations.

We also recommend following the Cammino’s Instagram pageExternal link for more tips, useful videos and interesting content.

  • 🎒 20–40 litre backpack – an indicative capacity to choose depending on the season and the amount of gear you need to carry. Suitable all year round; in winter, a few extra litres may be useful for bulkier clothing.
  • 👕 Merino wool shirt – comfortable while walking, helps manage perspiration and adapts well to changes in temperature. Particularly recommended in autumn, winter and spring, but also useful on cooler summer days.
  • ☀️ UV-protective technical shirt – provides protection during the many hours spent on sections exposed to the sun. Particularly recommended from spring to early autumn, especially during the hottest months.
  • 👖 Durable, tear-resistant technical trousers – useful because on some sections of the Trail you may come into contact with bushes and vegetation. Recommended all year round; lighter models are ideal in spring and summer.
  • 🧦 Technical socks – preferably reinforced at the toes and heels, the areas most exposed to stress during long days of walking. Essential in every season, choosing the thickness according to the temperature.
  • 🧥 Lightweight fleece – useful when temperatures drop without adding too much weight to your backpack. Highly recommended in autumn, winter and spring; it can also be useful on cooler summer evenings.
  • 🌧️ Waterproof, breathable and windproof jacket – protects you from rain and, above all, from the wind, which can be present even on apparently mild days. Bring it all year round, with particular attention in autumn, winter and spring.
  • 🧢 UV-protective hat – protects your head and face during long hours outdoors. Particularly important in spring, summer and early autumn.
  • 🕶️ Sunglasses and sunscreen – sun protection is important even when temperatures are not particularly high. Useful all year round, but especially important from spring to autumn.
  • 👚 Change of clothes – it is useful to organise spare clothing in separate bags to keep the contents of your backpack tidy and protected. All year round.
  • 🩲 Spare underwear – the video suggests packing one extra set in addition to what you think you will strictly need. All year round.
  • 🛏️ Pyjamas – to pack together with your other personal items for overnight stays. All year round, choosing lighter or warmer sleepwear depending on the season.
  • 🧻 Microfibre towel – takes up very little space, is lightweight and dries quickly. Useful all year round.
  • 🩴 Flip-flops or sandals – comfortable for giving your feet a rest after completing a stage and practical in accommodation facilities. All year round.
  • 🩱 Swimsuit – you are in Sardinia, and along the Trail there may be plenty of opportunities to enjoy a swim! 🌊 Particularly recommended from spring to autumn, especially on stages close to the coast.
  • 🎒 Small lightweight daypack – allows you to leave your main backpack at your accommodation and explore sites and places of interest more comfortably at the end of the stage. Useful in any season.
  • 📒 Cammino Credential – accompanies walkers throughout their experience on the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara. Always bring it with you, in every season.
  • 🪪 ID document and wallet – it is best to keep them in a waterproof pouch or bag to protect them from rain, moisture and perspiration. All year round.
  • 🔋 Power bank – useful for keeping your smartphone charged during the stages, especially when using it for navigation, checking route information or taking photos. Recommended all year round.
  • 🥤 Cup or mug – a small accessory that can come in handy during the journey without taking up much space. All year round.
  • 🔪 Small pocket knife or multi-tool – practical for minor needs that may arise along the Trail. All year round.
  • 💧 Water bottle and enough water – it is important to start each stage carrying enough water to complete the entire route, especially when refill points are far apart. Essential all year round, with particular care in spring, summer and on hotter days.
  • 🥢 Trekking poles – help on climbs, descents and uneven terrain, and can reduce the strain on your joints. Useful all year round, especially on the more demanding stages or after rainfall.
  • 🥾 Hiking shoes – it is best to choose footwear with a durable upper, good toe protection and adequate protection for the sole of the foot, as rocky and uneven terrain is common along the CMSB. Essential in every season; greater waterproofing can be particularly useful in autumn and winter.

One final tip

There is no single backpack setup that is right for everyone. Before setting off, always check the time of year, weather conditions and the characteristics of the stages you plan to walk.
